It's been a while since I've done a just-me-and-keys cover. This time, I decided to cover a song by this year's Golden Melody Award's Best New Artist, Li Rong Hao (李榮浩). He's from Mainland China, and honestly, he's not much to look at nor does he have much stage presence or charisma at the moment. But apparently he has been in the industry for a long time, writing songs and doing some production stuff behind the scenes. He's a multi instrumentalist (albeit not seemingly specialised in his skills), and he wrote, arranged and produced most of his first originals album that was released last year.
Some of his songs are quite well written, though they sound like they are written by an instrumentalist more than a vocalist (there is a lot of motif repetition and not a lot of room for breathing). He is a fan of John Mayer, so the influence is obvious. In fact, he has been accused of 'copying' John Mayer by netizens and news outlets (however this might just be a pre-planned way by the promotional staff involved to create some buzz. Any news is good news apparently).
After spending some time figuring out the textures of the piano part, I recorded the vocals and this time T made me edit my own takes. After I finished, he mixed it astoundingly quickly (darn that multi-talented hubby of mine), and I sent it off to Timo.
WHO is Timo? He is the young teenage son of my boss, Pastor Gordon. Very young, but extremely passionate about videography, and has impressive technical know-how. We were chatting after church once, and since he is free during the summer, I asked if he'd like to help me with a video cover and he jumped on board. He even started reminding me regularly to get the audio done for him to listen to.
I thank God for provision from unlikely people! I never thought I'd have a teenage whiz shoot a video for me, but it happened! And we did it in church, which owns a beautiful Kawaii baby grand. And the general decor in church is beautiful as well.
Xiao Qian and Timo shot for about 4 hours. And Timo had it edited in 2 days.
It's an imperfect first collaboration. I should have had more eye/nose make up on and perhaps styled my hair a bit more. I also needed to be more expressive when I lip-synced or sung with the track. Timo and Xiao Qian also needs to learn how to capture human expressions and nuances a bit better, as well as find more flattering angles. All this will come with experience. But it's a beautiful video overall and I'm proud of the cover.
Thank you God for opportunities to have fun and make music, even in the midst of the many emotionally chaotic situations I've had to go through.
